Shadows on the Road
Dust in my lungs, ghosts in my chest,
The war is over, though they say I can rest.
I carry more than a loaded gun,
I carry the faces of what I’ve done.
My voice was a flicker on a dead broken line,
A name in the silence, erased by time.
I held to hope, I held to grace,
But I lost my soul in that far-off place.
There are shadows on the road tonight,
And silence where the guns once bite.
You say I’m home, but I still roam,
Through every name I’ll never know.
Can love undo what war became?
Can fire still warm a man with shame?
If peace is real, let it begin —
Not with some stars and stripes, but from within.
There are shadows on the road tonight,
And memories I can’t set right.
You want me home, it’s true,
But a part of me will never be with you.
Shadows on the road…
